THREE WAYS
PLAY THEM
One of the four sounds in the moose sounds library. Below it three ways: the technique, the explosive version, and carried through a megaphone.
THE TECHNIQUE
EXPLOSIVE
THROUGH THE MEGAPHONE
Bull grunts come from your chest and deep in your throat. Curl your tongue up in the center of your mouth, plug your nose, and make the sound. A deep, short “U” or “Ugh!!” is the easiest way in. An “OH!!” works too. Keep them low pitched and a little explosive.
They range from hiccups to explosive coughing sounds, and they usually come one to two seconds long at two-to-three-second intervals.
It does not have to be perfect. Wayne’s own way of putting it: if you woke up in an ugly mood and decided to pick a fight with a stranger, several different insults would do the job. Calling a bull in the rut is much the same. Try to sound as close as you can. Somewhat close will usually do it.
From about 1 September, when most big bulls have stripped their velvet and turned ornery, add short deep grunts to your thrashing, especially in the first and last session of each day.
On a bull that already has cows with him, grunts and thrashing are the safer choice than cow calls, because cows can lead him away.
